Billy’s memorial garden, second option

My previous article tells a bit about Billy Schulz and describes a site named Cathedral Springs for the memorial garden. What I didn’t tell you is that there is a second possibility for the garden. The second option is an island formed by the same creek that comes out of the springs. Here’s a picture of the island looking in across the bridge:

I told you my brother Tom and I are working together on the project. This is somewhat intimidating for me because Tom has put in a lot of art installations that involve meditation and/or remembrance. You may wish to check out some work by Tom Schulz (CLICK HERE).

Here are some of Tom’s preliminary thoughts on the two sites:

“I see the little island as inundated with plants on the perimeter. One bench. One granite obelisk that has his name and something like “Have a good Life”. Deliberately crossing a bridge to have a contemplative moment to consider what a good life would be for you then re-crossing the bridge into that new life. Elegant.

The other needs to be more massive in scale, intimate, but capable of having 50 people sit and sing or participate in a service. It is a great project but can’t be done justice for what we have in the current budget. It could be started for that and planned for later stages of development. It needs to be elegant as well.”

Here’s a picture of the island looking toward the outside.

So, according to Tom (and I concur) either site would make a beautiful memorial garden and it’s true that the larger project could be done in stages.

Tom has made the statement that “Billy was a very deliberate man. He required time to contemplate before making a move.

Billy taught me the positive aspects of pondering. John and I are already in the pondering stages.”

And there you have it. We have several choices to prioritize before we can begin the design stages. What will happen?

Stay tuned.
